Biography
James Gosling is a Canadian computer scientist who is best known as the creator of the Java programming language. He was born on May 19, 1955, in Calgary, Alberta, Canada.
Gosling received his Bachelor of Science degree in Computer Science from the University of Calgary in 1977, and his Ph.D. in Computer Science from Carnegie Mellon University in 1983.
After completing his Ph.D., Gosling worked at various technology companies including IBM and Sun Microsystems (later acquired by Oracle Corporation). While at Sun Microsystems, he led the team that developed the Java programming language, which was first released in 1995.
Java quickly became one of the most popular programming languages in the world due to its simplicity, portability, and security features. It is used to develop a wide variety of applications, from mobile apps to enterprise software systems.
Gosling has received numerous awards for his work in computer science, including the Order of Canada in 2007 and the Computer History Museum Fellow Award in 2018. He has also been inducted into the Canadian Information Productivity Awards Hall of Fame.
In addition to his work in computer science, Gosling is an avid amateur robot builder and has competed in several robot competitions. He is also an active member of the Canadian sailing community and has competed in various sailing races.
Currently, Gosling is working as the Chief Software Architect at Liquid Robotics, a company that develops unmanned ocean vehicles for scientific and commercial applications.
