Sanskrit- Ancient language of India and Its importance

Sanskrit is one of the ancient languages in the world. This classical language has a significant role in Hindu philosophy and later used in historical texts of Buddhism and Jainism too. In terms of grammar, phonetics and vocabulary it was regarded as an efficient language of that time. Due to its philology and linguistics, Sanskrit is appreciated by Experts around the world. 

There are two major categories of Sanskrit: Vedic Sanskrit and Classical Sanskrit. Sanskrit belongs to the Indo European family of languages according to the Experts. Sanskrit declined about and after the 13th century. It declined during the Islamic invasions of South Asia. Some scholars even said that the Sanskrit language was dead by the 1st millennium BCE. Significant collections of Sanskrit manuscripts and inscriptions have been found in Myanmar, Thailand, Vietnam, Malaysia, Mongolia, Afghanistan, Kazakhstan etc. The history and the expansion of Sanskrit language is vast.

Vedas the soul of Indian culture and Hinduism were written in Sanskrit. Ramayana, The Bhagavad Gita and Mahabharat were also originally composed in Sanskrit. Sushruta Samhita on Medicine and Surgery and Charaka Samhita in Ayurveda are two important Sanskrit texts from ancient India. Shakuntala, Meghduta etc are the epic poems of Indian poet and dramatist Kalidasa, written in Sanskrit. Sanskrit literature contains a wide range of texts and scriptures explaining different roots of Science like ,Chemistry, Mathematics, Agriculture, Geometry, Metallurgy, Medicine, Astrology etc. It is not limited to scientific knowledge, it also provides spiritual knowledge to mankind. Sanskrit shares wisdom, believes in humanity, ethical values, development of an individual and society. 

Sanskrit was the major language in ancient India and it has been taught in traditional Gurukulas. Its importance was recognized by the Indian constitution and it is included as scheduled language. It is sad that currently in India there are no first language speakers of Sanskrit. However, Sanskrit is widely taught in schools at secondary level. Sanskrit is still used in chants and hymns during the ceremony and rituals in Hinduism and Buddhism.
